Permanent Deacon

Deacon Doug McManaman
Email: dmcmanaman@sympatico.ca

Deacon Doug McManaman was born in Etobicoke, Ontario but was raised in Montreal. His family moved out of Quebec during the political turmoil of the late 70s, just after he graduated from high school. When he was 17 years old, Doug hitchhiked to Nashville, Tennessee to look for work as a Bluegrass Banjo player. On the way there he was given a lift by Monsignor Tom Wells of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Meeting this joyful priest was the turning point in his life; so after a ten-year absence, he returned to the Church. After touring with two bands and winning the Canadian National Open Banjo Contest (1980), Doug decided to return to school. He studied Philosophy at the University of St. Jerome's College, and it was there that he met his wife Cecilia, a native of Kitchener, Ontario.

In 1984, Cecilia and Doug moved to Montreal where he completed his M.A in Theology at the University of Montreal. He completed the course work for his PhD, finished Teachers College at McGill, and then decided to suspend his studies to begin teaching Religion in Toronto. They moved to Aurora in 1992 and began Fostering for the CAS. In 1996 they adopted their daughter Sarah.

Doug was ordained a Deacon on May 31st, 2008, and in addition to his Liturgical Ministry at Our Lady of Grace Parish also ministers to those who suffer from mental illness at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket and CAMH on Queen Street in Toronto.
